On the flip side, the Green Season, stretching from May to November, brings torrential rains that breathe life into the rainforests, transforming the landscape into an even more vibrant green.
Despite the rain, the Green Season has its own charm, with fewer tourists and a more relaxed pace of life.
Essential Year-Round Packing Items
Regardless of the season, there are several essential items that should always find a place in your suitcase when traveling to Costa Rica.
Sunscreen is crucial, as Costa Rica's proximity to the equator results in strong sun exposure year-round.
A broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 50 is recommended to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. We usually recommend using the brand Sun Bum. If you tend to sunburn easily, it’s smart to bring along a sunburn relief gel with Aloe Vera.
Insect repellent is another must-have, particularly if you plan on exploring Costa Rica's famed national parks and rainforests. The tropical climate is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can carry diseases such as Dengue Fever and Zika (not a current threat). Opt for a repellent that contains at least 20% DEET for optimal protection.
Equally important is a reusable water bottle. Staying hydrated is key in the tropical climate, and a reusable bottle is not only environmentally friendly, but it also ensures that you have a water source handy at all times. We recommend Yeti Ramblers in 26oz capacities.
Other items to consider including in your packing list are a sun hat or a baseball cap and sunglasses for sun protection, quick-dry clothing suitable for the hot and humid weather, and a waterproof jacket or rain poncho for those unexpected rain showers.
We recommend the rain ponchos by ‘Frogg Toggs’ because they are durable, lightweight, breathable and come in a little pouch making it easier to pack and carry around.
Bringing along a travel first-aid kit is always important. We really like this one made by Protect Life as it brings all the necessary first-aid solutions in a very convenient travel pouch.
Make sure that you carry all of your prescription medicines in it as well as some of the most popular medicines for migraine, pain, and stomach illness.
Quick tip: tap water is totally drinkable in Costa Rica.
A key component in your packing list is a backpack. This can be a regular backpack or a dedicated hiking backpack. This is essential for whenever your visit the national parks or are going on hikes.
Ideally, it should be a backpack that can carry a water bladder for extra hydration such as the ones made by CamelBak.
We like the backpacks made by Osprey and Thule because we are total gear snobs. Nonetheless, any regular backpack that you have will do.
Considering that some of the country's wildlife are nocturnal, including a flashlight in your gear might enhance your chances of spotting these creatures after sunset. We recommend the flashlights made by Surefire. They are extremely durable, rugged and highly potent. Make sure to bring along a couple of Surefire spare batteries.
Lastly, consider investing in a portable power bank. The Dry Season (December - April)
The dry season in Costa Rica, extending from December to April, is characterized by brilliant sunshine and blue skies, making it a perfect time to explore the country's stunning beaches and lush rainforests. Average daily temperatures hover around 28-32°C (82-90°F), with the coastal areas being a bit warmer than the interior regions.
Given the warm and dry conditions, it's wise to pack light, breathable clothing. Cotton t-shirts, shorts, and sundresses make for comfortable day attire. Don't forget your swimwear for those refreshing dips in the ocean or hotel pool.
A hat, sunglasses, and a pair of flip flops are essential for beach outings. Evenings can be a bit cooler, so a light jacket or a wrap might come in handy.
This season also offers excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and bird watching; hence, a good-quality camera and binoculars are necessary additions to your luggage.
Hiking shoes are recommended, especially if you plan to navigate the trails of Costa Rica's national parks. We recommend hiking shoes made by Salomon, Merrell or Columbia. They are of the greatest quality, waterproof and very comfortable. Nonetheless, any high quality sneaker will suffice.

The Green Season (May - November)
The green season in Costa Rica, spanning from May to November, showcases a different facet of the country's natural beauty. During this period, landscapes turn vividly lush, and the country experiences frequent showers, particularly in the afternoon. Despite the rainfall, the temperatures remain warm, averaging around 26-28°C (78-82°F).
Given the wet conditions during the green season, packing waterproof and moisture-wicking clothing is essential. An umbrella or poncho will come handy during sudden downpours, while a waterproof jacket is indispensable for cooler evenings or rainforest treks.
Opt for moisture-wicking clothing, as they dry quickly, keeping you comfortable. Waterproof shoes or hiking boots are recommended to navigate the muddy trails during this period.
In terms of gear, it's crucial to take measures to protect your electronics from the rain. Waterproof bags or dry cases for your electronics, such as cameras and smartphones, are a necessity.

It is very important to bring along any medicines (OTC / prescription) as they are more expensive and sometimes difficult to find in Costa Rica. Same applies for sunscreen, mosquito repellent and your personal toiletries.
